Following the current trend, GM engineers when developing a new Duramax engine first of all thought about its weight. With this in mind, they came up with a new way to hold the crankshaft. The main necks (parts responsible for holding the crankshaft) are created using a unique process called fracture distribution. This technology has improved accuracy, increased power and reduced manufacturing costs.
In addition, this unique design provides improved air circulation between the cylinder tanks. According to GM engineer Charlie Freese (Charlie Freese), this design reduces slippage in the fuel supply, which provides increased productivity. “In fact, one of the main problems of modern diesel engines is the ability to control the pressure exchange in the crankcase,” Mr. Frieze said.
The design of the engine is so successful that GM does not hide that it already plans to create gasoline power units on its basis.
Another feature of the engine is that its block is 30 percent stronger than any other diesel company. As a result, this engine produces 310 liters. with. power and 676 Nm of torque. At the same time, it consumes fuel 25 percent more efficiently compared to a gasoline engine of the same volume.
The new 4.5-liter Duramax will be installed on large-sized pickups and SUVs. Its launch in mass production is scheduled for 2009 or 2010. According to rumors, the first car on which it will be installed will be the Cadillac CTS.
